Cannabis is an herbal medication (Cannabis sativa). Cannabinoids, such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), are substances found in it.

Cannabis’s cannabinoids function by attaching themselves to particular locations on the brain and nerves. Although cannabis contains more than 100 different cannabinoids, the most researched are THC and CBD. Plant leaves and flowers contain the highest concentrations of cannabinoids.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a flowering, dioecious annual herb. The leaves have serrate leaflets and are palmately compound or digitate. Depending on the variety and growing circumstances, the number of leaflets on the first pair of leaves typically has one leaflet, and it gradually increases up to a maximum of roughly thirteen leaflets per leaf (usually seven or nine). This number again drops to one leaflet per leaf at the top of a flowering plant. On the main branch of a mature plant, the lower leaf pairs typically occur in an opposite leaf structure, and the upper leaf pairs in an alternate structure.
